List of national parks of Finland

In Finland there are 37 national parks. All farms except one are managed by the Finnish national forest authority Metsähallitus. Only for the Koli National Park is Metla, the Finnish Forest Research Institute, in charge. The total area of all Finnish National Park is 8150 km ², which is about 2.5 percent of the total area of Finland.

In the national parks, the everyman is severely limited. Often, it is forbidden to leave the marked trails. The tents or make a fire is allowed only at the designated locations. In the parks with lakes swimming is normally allowed. Not rarely allowed to drive in the lakes canoe or boat.

National parks in planning

In a press release of 27 February 2013, the Finnish Ministry of the Environment announces plans for four new national parks. They are in Teijo area at Salo in Southwest Finland, around the Southern Konnevesi Lake in the Lakes region between Central Finland and Northern Savo, in Olvassuo Wetlands in Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu (eastern central Finland ) and in the Fjell the Käsivarsi - Wilderness Area in Lapland arise.
