Luis Fernández ( born October 2, 1959 in Tarifa / Spain ) is a retired French footballer and current coach.

The player

The defensive midfielder played in the youth of AS Saint -Priest ( near Lyon) and in 1978 was committed by Paris Saint- Germain FC; with this club Fernández remained until 1986, and here he also scored his greatest successes: from 1982 to 1986, he won a title every year with the club or national team. Then he worked for three years to Racing Club Paris, leaving his playing career at AS Cannes (1989-1993) bar. In 1985 he was awarded the French Footballer of the Year.

Between 1982 and 1992, Luis Fernández was erected in 60 international matches by the French national team; He scored six goals. After the World Cup in 1982 and up to the 1986 World Cup, he was part of the legendary " magic square " of the Équipe Tricolore, the coach Michel Hidalgo Fernández, Michel Platini, Jean Tigana and Alain Giresse formed in 1984 and brought to the European Championship title. In the 1986 World Cup Fernandez finished with the French national team to 3rd place in the legendary quarter-final against Brazil he sealed with his penalty the 5-4 defeat of Brazil in a penalty shootout.

The coach

Immediately after the end of his playing career changed Luis Fernández to the dugout his last club AS Cannes (1993 /94) - and has already been voted coach of the year 1993. He then coached Paris Saint- Germain, (1994-1996 and 2000-2003), where he in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup against Rapid Vienna won the title in 1996, was in between working at Athletic Bilbao ( 1996-2000) and became Spanish runner-up. In the season 2003/ 04 he moved Fernández again to Spain, where he was responsible for Espanyol.

In June 2005, he initially trained the team of Al- Rayyan Sports Club (Qatar ), which he already left again in November the same year. Soon after he took over as coach at Beitar Jerusalem ( Israel). At the end of the 2005/06 season Fernández left Jerusalem again.

In December 2006 he returned to the Spanish Primera División back to work at Betis Sevilla. In June 2007 he was released there because of lack of success. From January 2009, he coached the French second division club Stade Reims, the Fernández left again six months later, after he had not its descent can prevent.

In March 2010 Fernández took over the post of national coach of Israel.
