1996–97 French Division 1
The Division 1 1996/97 was the 59th season of the French Division 1 began the season on 11 August 1996. Promoted as SM Caen, Olympique Marseille and AS Nancy came from the Ligue 2 this. The season as champion finished the AS Monaco and thus became the successor to AJ Auxerre. Qualifying for the UEFA Champions League managed to Monaco and Paris SG. For the UEFA Cup, FC Nantes, Bordeaux, Auxerre, the SC Bastia and Olympique Lyon and FC Metz and Racing Strasbourg qualified over the Coupe de la Ligue. At the UEFA Intertoto Cup the following season Montpellier HSC participated. About the Coupe de France OGC Nice secured the participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup the following year. Relegated to the Ligue 2 had to Caen, Nancy, Lille and Nice.
