Magnesia (regional unit)

The Regional District of Magnesia (Greek Periferiaki Enotita Magnesia Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Μαγνησίας ) is one of five regional districts of the Greek region of Thessaly. It was formed on the occasion of the administrative reform in 2010 from the mainland territory of the former prefecture of Magnesia. Proportional to its 193 439 inhabitants, the area sends 13 deputies to the Thessalian Regional Council, but has no more political significance than local authority. It is divided into five municipalities Almyros, Notio Pelion, Rigas Fereos, Volos and Zagora Mouresi.

Communities since 2011

Since the administrative reform in 2010 with effect from 1 January 2011, the prefecture was divided into two regional districts - the Sporades form their own regional district. From the pre-existing 26 municipalities eight large communities were formed, three of which belong to the Sporades.

* Alonissos ( 3), Skiathos (7) and Skopelos ( 8) belong to the new regional district Sporades.
