Ménil-en-Xaintois

Menil -en- Xaintois is a commune of 178 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in Lorraine. It belongs to the district Neufchâteau and Canton Mirecourt.

Geography

The community Menil -en- Xaintois is located in the southwest corner of the landscape Xaintois, about 40 kilometers north- west of Epinal and about 15 kilometers north of Vittel. The stream Ruisseau du Grand Pré in the north and the current flowing in the south of the municipality Ruisseau du Puits de Haye drain westward across Vraine Vair and the Meuse. Just east of Menil is the Rhine-Meuse watershed.

The landscape around Menil is hilly and dominated by grain fields. In the south, the municipality has a comprehensive about 50 acres share of Bois lingerie Haye. In this forest area in the southern tip of the district is 403 meters above sea level, the highest point in the municipality.

Neighboring communities of Menil -en- Xaintois are Totainville in the north, Dombasle -en- Xaintois and Rouvres -en- Xaintois in the east, Gemmelaincourt in the south, Saint-Menge southwest, Gironcourt -sur- Vraine in the west and Biécourt in the northwest.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1109 as Masnil in a document. From the 13th century the landscape name has prevailed ( 1251 Manil s Sainctoris, 1711 Mesnil en Xaintois ) In the designation. In the Ancien Régime, the village belonged to the Bailiwick of Mirecourt, the Lords of Menil were the Duke of Lorraine assumed in the Middle and Lower jurisdiction of the Abbot of Chaumousey. The church, dedicated to the Holy Apostle James, was part of the Deanery of the Diocese of Toul Poussay within. The town hall and school building was built in 1872.

Attractions

In Jacob's Church ( Église Saint -Jacques -le- Majeur ) from the 13th century a painted on canvas set is stored, the Domremy, is the birthplace of Joan of Arc, before the extensive renovations to church, town hall and bridge. The set dates from the period 1896-1901, as led by the local pastor of Calvary of Joan of Arc was performed in plays. The image is classified as a monument historique.

Economy and infrastructure

Agriculture continues to play an important role in Menil and the surrounding area. Some residents are commuters to the commercial areas of Gironcourt -sur- Vraine and at Epinal Mirecourt Airport. The houses of the village street are grouped along the two-lane partially laned road (D 166) of Epinal Mirecourt after about Neufchâteau. Menil -en- Xaintois Ramecourt and the neighboring village of Dombasle -en- Xaintois are the only places on the 50 km long expressway from Epinal to the Autoroute A31, which can not be bypassed by -pass roads.
