Mirecourt

Mirecourt ( German, obsolete: Meierhofen in Lorraine ) is a French town with 5779 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Neufchâteau, capital is ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Mirecourt, which was established in late 1997 Municipal Association Pays de Mirecourt.

Geography

The small town of Mirecourt is located at Madon, a tributary of the Moselle River, about 50 km south of Nancy, close to the French motorway A31 ( Beaune- Luxembourg ).

History

Mirecourt was founded by the Romans. The origin of the name Mercuri Curtis suggests a place of worship in honor of Mercurius. Later, the area belonged to the dominion of the Count of Toul.
