Moena

Moena ( Ladin Moena ) is an Italian town with 2689 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) on Avisio in Trentino, Trentino -Alto Adige.

Location and data

Moena is the largest town in Val di Fassa in Trentino and is located in a valley in the Dolomites. The municipality covers an area of 82 km ². Neighboring municipalities are Pozza di Fassa, Nova Levante (BZ ), Vigo di Fassa, Falcade (BL), and Soraga Predazzo.

Attractions

In the Holy San Vigilio church dedicated to the resort, which has a Gothic bell tower, there are several works by the painter Valentino Rovisi (1715-1783), a pupil of Tiepolo, who comes from Moena. Beside it is the chapel of San Wolfango with frescoes from the 15th century and a wooden ceiling from the Baroque era, the work of Giovanni Guadagnini Moenesers from the 17th century.

Once a year the festival " La Turchia " takes place. The living according to Turkish tradition, villagers celebrating an event that took place 323 years. An Ottoman Janissaries then changed the life of the village and became a hero. In the center is also a statue of a Janissary.

Economy

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the site of an agricultural character has transformed itself into a tourist destination, which is mainly due to the picturesque surroundings of the place and the growing number of ski slopes.

Sports

The town was made famous by an annually -starting there in January cross-country ski race ( Marcialonga ) and by taking place in the summer very large mountain bike marathon event ( Rampilonga ).
