Norair Nurikjan comes from an Armenian family who has been resident in Sliven. In his youth he played basketball, was discovered in a talent search event as a weightlifter. In this sport, he made due to his excellent physical condition rapid progress. He was soon absorbed into the Bulgarian Junior National Team and trained there by Ivan Abadschiew. Already at the age of 20 he was employed in the World and European Championships in Warsaw. That was his first start in an international championship. His next assignment at an international championship Nurikjan graduated in 1971 at the European Championships in Sofia. He managed there in the Olympic triathlon in the spring Weight 380 kg ( 120-115-145 ), but only enough for 5th place. The winner was there in January Wojnowski from Poland who came to 397.5 kg. At the World Cup 1971 in Lima, he managed 380 kg again and thus came as the European Championship on the 5th Place.

In 1972, he rose at the European Championships in Constanta in the Olympic triathlon at 387.5 kg ( 120-117,5-157,5 ), there was still directed by Dito Schanidse from the USSR, which reached 395 kg to 2nd place. But at the Olympic Games in Munich, he was able to turn the tables. He reached 402.5 kg ( 127,5-117,5-157,5 ) a new three - fight world record, and thus won the gold medal in front of Schanidse Ditto, which at 400 kg ( 127,5-120-152,5 ) increased.

In 1973 Nurikjan was not quite in the shape of the Year 1972. He was referred to both at the European Championships this year in Madrid, as well as at the World Championships in Havana Dito Schanidse featherweight to 2nd place. The distances, however, were always in short supply. In Madrid Schanidese won the new duel ( the press had been abolished the end of 1972 ) with 272.5 270 kg in Havana with 272.5 kg: 267.5 kg.

1974 went for Nurikjan at the European Championships in Verona and at the World Championships in Manila again for a spot back. He finished 3rd place both times. In Verona he lost 265 kg ( 115-150 ) of his compatriot Georgi Todorov, 272.5 kg and Dito Schanidse, who also reached 272.5 kg and in Manila, where he focused on 277.5 kg ( 122.5 - 155 ) increased, he remained behind Georgi Todorov, 280 kg ( 125-155 ) and Nikolai Kolesnikov from the USSR, as it reached 277.5 kg, but was a little easier.

At the World Cup and European Championship 1975 in Moscow Nurikjan had to work off in the bantamweight short at the behest of coach Ivan Abadschiew of team tactical reasons. However, this change got it bad, because weakened by excessive weight make it fabricated with this match three failed attempts in the snatch and therefore remained unplaced.

In 1976, he had to repeat the ordeal of Abrainierens in international championships. At the European Championships in Berlin (East ), but he succeeded well and he was 255 kg ( 110-145 ) European champion in single combat before Leszek Skorupa from Poland and Karel Prohl from Czechoslovakia. Also at the Olympic Games in Montreal, he trained in the bantamweight and landed there with 262.5 kg ( 117.5 to 145 ) in a duel his second Olympic gold medal, which he Cziura Grzegorz from Poland, 252.5 kg and Kenchiko Ando from Japan 250 kg ( 107.5 to 142.5 ) left behind.

After these Olympics, he finished his weightlifting career. Nurikjan had already begun during his playing time to train at the Sports Academy in Sofia sports. He completed his studies and became a coach, sometimes even head coach, the Bulgarian weightlifting team. Later he became General Secretary of the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation. In these roles, he was responsible for many successes together with the association's president Anton Kodschabaschew, Ivan Abadschiew and other officials and coaches have achieved the Bulgarian weightlifter. Unfortunately, he was also responsible for many doping scandals that were involved in the Bulgarian weightlifter in those years. Doping at the Bulgarian weightlifters runs like a red thread since the 1976 Olympic Games where the gold medalist Valentin Hristov and the silver medalist Blagoj Blagoev were doped up to the year 2008, when the entire Bulgarian weightlifting team, a total of eleven athletes of doping were transferred by the Bulgarian weightlifting.
