Obergeckler

Obergeckler is a municipality in the district of Bitburg -Prüm, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality New Castle.

History

Archaeological finds from the pre- and early history are not available. However, it is likely that the place was named in 1453 Jecklare and belonged to the Saxons settlements that have emerged around the year 800. The name contains Jecklare well as suffix the word ' lar ' what about grass court, maybe even big hurdle and probably also means settlement. By the 11th and 12th centuries belonged to Obergeckler Bidgau, then to the county of Vianden Luxembourg and consisted of 9 Stock goods. The spelling in 1501 was over Jecklair. Obergeckler was temporarily home to a dairy farm (administrative and basic judicial district ).

With the occupation of the Austrian Netherlands ( 1794), which included the Duchy of Luxembourg by French revolutionary troops, the place was French and was from 1795 to 1814 to the forests department. 1815, the former Luxembourg territory east of the Sauer and the Our the Congress of Vienna was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia.
