Reginald Doherty

Reginald " Reggie " Frank Doherty ( born October 14, 1872 in London, † December 29, 1910 ) was an English tennis player. He won, among others, from 1897 to 1900 throughout the individual title at the Wimbledon Championships. With his younger brother Laurence, he formed the most successful double by the turn of the century 1900.

Life and career

Reggie Doherty, called "Big Do", 1872 came at Wimbledon, London to the world. He attended Westminster School and later took a course of study at Trinity College of Cambridge University.

From 1891 Doherty took part in tennis tournaments. Between 1897 and 1900 he won in a single uninterrupted Wimbledon. In a double to his brother Laurence the side he reached 1897-1905 eight titles. In 1902 he reached at the U.S. Championships, the Challenge Round, but it lost to the defending champion William Larned in four sets.

At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900, he reached double with Laurence as well as in mixed on the side of Charlotte Cooper the first place. In some he gave to his brother in the semifinals a walkover, who won the Olympic gold medal after the final. In London in 1908 Reginald was able to win the doubles title again together with George Hillyard.

From 1902 to 1906 Doherty took part in the Davis Cup and won every year with the British team for the title.

Doherty, who only weighed 63 kg at a height of 1.85 m, had often to contend with gastrointestinal diseases. In 1908 he retired from the tennis circuit. He died two years later at the age of only 38 years in London's Kensington. In 1980 he was admitted along with his brother into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
