Laurence Doherty

Hugh Laurence " Laurie " Doherty ( born August 10, 1875 in London, † August 21 1919 in Broadstairs, Kent ) was an English tennis player. He won two Olympic titles in 1900, 1902-1906 five times the single title of the Wimbledon Championships and was the first non-American 1903 U.S. Championships.

Life

Laurence Doherty, the younger brother than three years of Reginald was also called "Little Do", 1875 came in Wimbledon, London to the world. Like his brother, Laurence also visited the Westminster School and then studied at Trinity College, University of Cambridge.

Doherty took 1893-1910 to tennis tournaments. After he was defeated in 1898 his brother Reginald in the final of the Wimbledon Championships, where he won from 1902 to 1906 five times in a row. He also won in 1903 as the first non-American to the U.S. Championships. With this victory, he became the first tennis player, who won both the Wimbledon Championships and the U.S. Championships for themselves.

Together with his brother he picked up beyond 1897-1905 eight times the doubles title at Wimbledon. 1902 and 1903 won the two also at the U.S. Championships.

At the Olympic Games in 1900 he won both the individual as well as with his brother in the doubles. In mixed he finished in third place on the side of Marion Jones.

In the Davis Cup, he played from 1902 to 1906 and brought with the British team in each year the title. Laurence lost it not one of his twelve single and double matches.

In 1903 he published the book with his brother RF and H.L. Doherty on Lawn Tennis. He died in 1919 at the age of only 43 years. In 1980 he was admitted along with his brother into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
