Genesis

After the release of his studio album Goodnight Vienna in November 1974, the album Two Sides of the Moon by Keith Moon was published in March 1975 containing the duets Solid Gold and Together by Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. In July 1975 Starrs were divorced with Maureen Starkey. Beginning of 1976, Ringo Starr with Guthrie Thomas nor his own composition Band of Steel as a duet, which appeared on the album Lies and Alibies by Guthrie Thomas.

On January 26, 1976, the record deal between Ringo Starr and the EMI ran out. Ringo Starr signed on March 10, 1976 a new record deal with Atlantic for the U.S. and with Polydor for the rest of the world. Furthermore, Ringo Starr changed his producer, so he opted for Arif Mardin instead of Richard Perry, who had produced his last two albums. But the musical concept of the previous albums, Ringo and Goodnight Vienna remained the same, so he once again invited a friend who should support him musically. The recordings for Ringo's Rotogravure ranged between April and June 1976, the preparatory work started two months earlier.

Again received Ringo Starr George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney previously unreleased compositions, the latter two were also present in the recordings. John Lennon contributed the piece Cookin ' ( In the Kitchen of Love ) in addition to piano accompaniment. It was Lennon's last appearance in a recording studio before his comeback in 1980. A home recording version of the song in which John Lennon sings was released on bootlegs. Paul McCartney sang in composition Pure gold in the background. George Harrison could not be there due to his own work on his album Thirty Three & 1/3 during the recording of I'll Still Love You. This song was also recorded by George Harrison himself, but has so far remained unpublished. Eric Clapton played on his contributed song This Be Called a Song guitar. Ringo Starr added three more (Community) compositions ( Cryin ', Las Brisas and Lady Gaye ) was added so that the remaining three songs from two foreign compositions by unknown artists (A Dose of Rock' n 'Roll and You Do not Know Me at all ) and a hit single in 1962 by Bruce Channel ( Hey Baby ) existed. The last song Spooky Weirdness consists only of spoken words that were edited in the recording studio with reverb, and other sound effects.

The album was commercially unsuccessful despite an extensive promotional tour of Ringo Starr by Europe and Japan.

The designer of the cover was John Kosh. The cover photos were taken by David Alexander. The back was photographed by Tommy Hanley and shows, described by fans, door of the Apple offices in London's Savile Row. The original pressing of the album was a small magnifying glass with which one should recognize the graffiti on the door better.
