Goodnight Vienna is the fourth studio album by Ringo Starr after the breakup of the Beatles. It was on November 15, 1974 in United Kingdom: published (USA November 18, 1974 ). In the U.S., the album was ranked eighth in the UK and number 30 in Germany # 39 in the charts.

Genesis

After the release of the commercially successful predecessor album Ringo Ringo Starr decided to retain the concept and committed again Richard Perry as producers and invited friends again, which should support him musically. The recordings lasted from May to September 1974.

John Lennon steered to a again a new composition - ( It's All Da-Da - Down To ) Goodnight Vienna - in and suggested including the Platters hit Only You (And You Alone ) from the year 1955. Both songs there is one version in the John Lennon sings, they were published in 1998 on the album John Lennon Anthology. When Poncia / Starr composition All By Myself John Lennon also played guitar. Another joint composition of Poncia / Starr Oo -Wee. Ringo Starr contributed the composition Call Me. In addition to two other so-called Oldies ( Husbands and Wives and Occapella ) three songs by foreign composers for the album Goodnight Vienna were written. Elton John wrote with Bernie Taupin song Snookeroo, in which Elton John also played the piano and the No No Song is a composition by Hoyt Axton. Easy for Me in 1975 on the album Duit On Mon recorded and released the composer Harry Nilsson new.

The album is the most commercially successful by Ringo by Ringo Starr. It contains two singles that reached the top ten of the charts in the U.S.. Ringo Starr later failed to reach the Top Ten of the singles or LP / CD charts in the U.S., UK or Germany.

The front cover photo is based on a scene from the science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Ringo Starr plays the role of Klaatu. The designer of the cover was Roy Kohara.

Only You (And You Alone )

The first single Only You (And You Alone ) ( Edit) / Call Me appeared previously in November 1974 and reached number six in the U.S., # 28 in the UK and Germany in the charts.

No No Song

The second single was in the U.S. in January 1975 No No Song / Snookeroo published and again reached number three in the U.S..

Snookeroo

In Britain and Germany was published in February 1975 as the second single Snookeroo / Oo -Wee, who could not place in the charts in both countries.

Goodnight Vienna / No No Song

In Germany Goodnight Vienna / No No Song was released in March 1975 as the third single, who could not place in the charts.

( It's All Down To ) Goodnight Vienna

In June 1975 appeared in the United States the third single ( It's All Down To ) Goodnight Vienna ( Single Mix ) / Oo -Wee ( Edit), which reached number 31 in the charts in the U.S.. The A-side is a special blend of the first and last song of the album.

In the U.S., a quadraphonic mix on 8- track tape was sold additionally.

Published in the UK promotional single from Only You (And You Alone ) contains the B-side an interview with the title: Interview by Bob Mercer with Ringo for the Salesmen and Uxbridge Road.

During the recording of four more songs ( slogan, It 's All Right, Lonely Weekends, Up the Tempo), according to studio recordings were still (partly) was added, the existence of which, however, are not demonstrated by publications on bootlegs.

For the song Only You (And You Alone ) a music video for promotional purposes was recorded, as well as for published here as a bonus track single Back Off Boogaloo.

Reissues

First published in CD format was made in November 1993 with three bonus tracks. The first two songs are published in March 1972 Single Back Off Boogaloo / Blindman; there are two Ringo Starr compositions, with George Harrison produced the A-side ( chart positions: USA: 9, United Kingdom: 2 Germany: 12). The B-side Blindman was produced by Ringo Starr and Klaus Voormann. The third bonus track is a longer version of Six O'Clock, this was released on the promotional LPs of the album Ringo, as well as the first edition of U.S. music cassettes. The CD release of 1992 has not yet been newly remastered.
