After the release of his last studio album Time Takes Time in June 1992 appeared in April 1994 on the album Whistling in the Wind by Leon Redbone duet My Little Grass Shack. In May 1995, on the compilation album For the Love of Harry: Everybody Sings Nilsson another duet, published here by Ringo Starr with Stevie Nicks, titled Lay Down Your Arms. The song was composed by the late Harry Nilsson in January 1994. In October 1996, the duet Honey Do not was of Carl Perkins on his album Go Cat Go published with Ringo Starr, but in this case it is subsequently to a live recording from the album Ringo Starr and His All- Starr Band, at the Carl Perkins his singing add mixed. In the years 1994-1996 Ringo Starr was also involved in work on the Anthology project, the Beatles.

The concept of production was taken over by the albums Ringo and Goodnight Vienna because again supported a number of prominent musicians Ringo Starr for the album. The producers are committed Ringo Starr Mark Hudson, whom he had met during the recording for Time Takes Time. Mark Hudson, who wrote songs for Aerosmith, among others, began with Ringo Starr and Dean Grakal and Steve Dudas writing songs for the new album in February 1997. Some of the album's songs remind in parts to the music of the Beatles and so remains Vertical Man musical in the continuity of the previous album Time Takes Time.

The first recordings for the album were from February to April 1997 in WHATINTHEWHATHE? Studios take place where the songs Everyday, King of Broken Hearts, Mr. Double -It -Up, One, and I'll Be Fine Anywhere were taken. During this first recording time music group Ringo and the Roundheads was established, which should one occur in advertising campaigns for the album Vertical.

After a break, found other recordings in the same studio in July and August 1997 instead of where the songs La De Da, What in the ... World, Mind Field, Without Understanding, Good News, and I'm Yours were taken.

The end of September and October 1997 contributed Paul McCartney in his studio The Mill backing vocals to La De Da and What in the World ... and bass playing to the second song on. In the A.I.R. Studios were recorded orchestrations for the songs I'm Yours and King of Broken Hearts.

In November 1997, were again in the WHATINTHEWHATHE? Studios recorded the songs I Was Walkin ', and Puppet Sometimes, also the previously recorded pieces were completed by other vocal and instrumental additions. The songs Love Me Do, a remake of the first Beatles single from October 1962 and the title song Vertical Man nor were recorded between November 1997 and January 1998, the second song was not yet published. George Harrison added in his studio Henley on Thames at the guitar to the songs King of Broken Hearts, and I'll Be Fine Anywhere. In the A & M Studios finally the mix of songs by Geoff Emerick took place.

The planned release on the label Guardian could not be completed because this was insolvent, Ringo Starr signed in April 1998, a new record deal with Mercury. The contract with Mercury was limited to three albums publications.

In the Abbey Road studios the song by Steven Tyler for the song Drift Away was replaced by the songs of Tom Petty, because the record company of Steve Tyler refused to release the recording in May 1998. Early promotional CD of the album Vertical Man include the version with Steve Tyler.

The album was relatively commercially successful, and so an album by Ringo Starr in 1974 ( Goodnight Vienna ) reached again for the first time the British and German charts.

The designer of the cover was Sandra Monteparo. The cover photos were taken by Henry Diltz.
