Sankt Johann, Mainz-Bingen

Sankt Johann in Rheinhessen is a municipality in the district Mainz -Bingen, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Sprendlingen gene Ingen, which has its headquarters in the town of Sprendlingen.

History

The typical Rheinhessen wine-growing village was called in the Middle Ages hamlet Megelsheim and was first mentioned in 1220 for the first time. 1234 came along with Megelsheim Sprendlingen of the Raugrafen to the County of Sponheim - Kreuznach. From this period dates the lower part of the municipal coat of arms checkered blue - gold. 1417 inherited the County of Sponheim -Stark Castle 4/5 of the County of Sponheim -Kreuznach, including the local rule over Megelsheim. 1437 inherited Johann V., the last Count of Sponheim - Starkenburgring the local rule to a Kondominat of the Margrave of Baden and the Counts of Veldenz. 1444 inherits Palatinate -Zweibrücken - simmering the county Veldenz. 1459 there is a house divided into Palatinate -Zweibrücken and Pfalz- simmering, which also includes St. Johann is slammed and the 1559 also inherits the Palatinate. 1707 Kondominat from Baden and the Palatinate now is resolved in the area of the former County of Sponheim - Kreuznach. Structures

The town's landmark is the high-Gothic Protestant Church of St. John, which derives the Baptist as evidenced by the display on the vault keystone in the choir, takes its name from John. It is one of the most important religious buildings in Rheinhessen. The church was built in the second half of the fourteenth century by the Counts of Sponheim -Kreuznach as a pilgrimage church and is situated on the Rhine-Hesse path of pilgrims. Worth seeing are its medieval wall paintings, particularly because of a monumental representation ( 6 mx 8 m) to Czech models find the worship of Christ and Mary by members of the founding family in a fantastic architecture framework among art historians much attention, and the modern church windows of Heinz Hindorf. Regular events

In St. John's Church Concerts are regularly held. The St. Johann fair goes back to the Middle Ages and is celebrated on the weekend after the Midsummer.
