History

The small town of Schirmeck and the eponymous castle above it were up to the Revolution an administrative center of the bishop of Strasbourg. The department of Bas- Rhin was formed in 1790 and was the Schirmeck provisionally allocated. In 1795 it moved to the Vosges. From 1871, belonged Schirmeck and the same canton to Reichsland Alsace- Lorraine. After the end of World War Schirmeck remained with the Alsace or in the rebuilt département Bas -Rhin.

During the German occupation between 1940 and 1944 Schirmeck was teamed with La Broque, Rothau Barembach and the greater community Schirmeck. On the outskirts of La Broque was from August 1940 to November 1944, the security camp Schirmeck Vorbruck, which served the German police authorities, among others, as " re-education camp " as part of the " Germanization " of Alsace.
