Traenheim

Traenheim ( German Traenheim ) is a commune with 701 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the canton Wasselonne and the Local Government Association, Coteaux de la Mossig.

Geography

Traenheim lies in the west of the Alsace region, 21 kilometers west of Strasbourg, 15 kilometers north of Obernai and 5 kilometers south-east from the cantonal capital Wasselonne, between the neighboring communities of West Hope in the west and in the east Odratzheim. The northern boundary of the municipality is the Kohbach, a left tributary of the Mossig.

Culture

Traenheim is nationally represented with a flower in the Conseil des villes et villages fleuris ( National Council of flowery towns and villages ). The " flowers " are awarded as part of a regional competition, a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Attractions

The building in which the old synagogue is located, contributes to the door to the basement the year 1582. In 1722 the building was converted into a synagogue, which was opened in 1723. The inner walls of the old synagogue painted with Hebrew inscriptions, flowers and other decorations. Joseph (Joe) Woerlin ( born October 9, 1864 in Traenheim, † June 22, 1919 in St. Louis, United States) was a professional baseball player who played in 1895 with the then Washington Senators team.

Traenheim belongs to the Alsace Wine Route. Major lines of business of Traenheimois are, next to the viticulture, fruit growing and breeding of domestic cattle and domestic sheep. There is a wine cooperative and a wine trail on site.
