Sorrento

Sorrento ( Sorrento Italian ) is an Italian town with 16,535 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Naples. It is part of the Mountain Community Comunità Montana Mons Lactarius - Sorrento Peninsula.

Geography

The town of Sorrento is situated on the Sorrento peninsula on the Gulf of Naples in the province of Naples. It lies on black cliffs of dark volcanic rock on a tufa terrace. Sorrento is surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs. Draw sunsets and orange and lemon gardens visitors from all over the world for more then 2000 years

For centuries, Sorrento is target of northern European longing for Italy. Writers and painters have immortalized the city in words and pictures.

Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are known for their large lemons (Italian limoni ). Typical products from these fruits are Limoncello, a very tasty lemon liqueur to mention lemon and chocolate. History

Mythical past

The present name Sorrento ( Sorrento) goes back to the ancient name Surrentum and the myth of the sirens, the confused by her singing sailors. According to legend, only Odysseus and his companions were able to resist the charm of the siren song, and then the sirens turned into the rock with the name of Li Galli ( on the south side of the peninsula, near Positano in the Gulf of Salerno).

Historical Facts

Sorrento's origins lie in the 7th century BC, when it was founded by the Phoenicians. From 474-420 BC Sorrento was under the regency of Greek, Roman municipium until it was 150 years later. In this time of the Roman Empire, it became the summer residence of aristocrats and rich. The best-preserved testimony is the Villa Pollio a rich Roman, situated on the sea near the fishing village Puolo.

Over the centuries, many peoples have attempted to break through the city wall built by the Greeks and conquer the town. So Sorrento was captured in 1133 by the Normans.

  • In Sorrento, the film Pane, Amore e plays ... ( German: Love, bread and a thousand kisses; 1955) with Sophia Loren. The film was shot, among others at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Victoria and in neighboring cities.

Traffic

A branch of the narrow gauge Circumvesuviana line (Napoli Porta Nolana Sorrento) ends in Sorrento.

There are ferries to Capri, Ischia and Naples.
