Reception

In the U.S. Billboard 200, the album was at # 7 in the UK album charts at number 12 both in Germany and in Austria it took even one week the top spot. The album was awarded, among others, in the United States, Canada and Germany with platinum in Australia, France and Finland, it was awarded a gold record.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote for Allmusic: "It's the album that would have highly praised, produced by Rick Rubin Ballbreaker should be: a simple, addictive, hard album, bursting with cheeky riffs, supported by a crunching, passing through the intestines Sound. "

The Rolling Stone Magazine awarded three out of five stars. The Rock-Hard - magazine awarded 8.5 out of a possible ten points, this verdict Götz Kühnemund: " That it would be AC / DC not succeed in glorious Back in Black / For Those About to Rock - times ( from the old Bon Scott Not to mention all masterpieces ) to socialize, it was clear from the outset. The reason is as simple as irrefutable: Brian Johnson no longer has the power of a Thirty Years and cook ( in the studio ) for at least ten years on the back burner. You constantly have the feeling that the man yelling at absolute upper limit of its possibilities and tilts every moment of your socks - what particularly the last studio album Ballbreaker hurt. In Stiff Upper Lip sounds Brian ( of his job live surprisingly perfectly done) something more powerful, at least in some songs. So he reached the Highway to Hell suspected Satellite Blues, the uptempo rocker Safe In New York City ( with Let There Be Rock -Beat ) or the earwigs House of Jazz and Damned least Fly on the Wall - level. With numbers like Hold Me Back (ironically Brian's favorite song ) or the unspectacular opener Stiff Upper Lip, however, it is on its last legs, which is emphasized by the guitar -heavy mix. Still, Stiff Upper Lip is anything but a disappointment and definitely stronger than Ballbreaker. George Young's earthy, freed from any frills production can be the centerpiece of the band, Malcolm's rhythm guitar, perfectly come into play and sometimes even reminds of old milestones of Bon Scott era. Drummer Phil Rudd, the longer the break, was to listen to Ballbreaker, gradually finds its way back to his old, unique groove. And the irrepressible Angus, whose energy apparently enough for two lives, doing what he has always done better than anyone else: He plays the blues scales tirelessly up and down the fretboard that its SG hopelessly smoldering in front of him. Sure, there are more AC / DC albums, lots of even - but the comparison with the "competition" (as if it would have ever given for AC / DC) Stiff Upper Lip still wins with ease. "
