1st Generation (1995-2004 )

Toyota Tacoma (1995-1997)

A model named Tacoma was first introduced in 1995 and came from the offered worldwide Hilux. The Hilux was simply sold in the U.S. until 1995 when Toyota truck.

Overall, there were three engines for the Tacoma: the 2.4 -liter R4 with 142 bhp (106 kW ) of power and 217 Nm of torque, the 2.7 -liter with 150 bhp R4 (112 kW ) of power and 240 Nm of torque and the 3.4 -liter V6 with 190 bhp (142 kW ) of power and 298 Nm of torque. The 2.4 -liter R4 consumed 8.25 l/100 km out of town, the 2.7 -liter R4 extra-urban 9.2 l/100 km and the 3.4- liter V6 extra-urban 10.9 l/100 km.

With rear drive Tacoma had five-hole rims. There was the 2.4 -liter R4 and the 3.4 -liter V6 engine, depending on the selected equipment line, as well as manual or automatic.

Wheel-drive Tacoma had six-hole rims, as they were used in earlier pickup models. The frame is up to behind the front leaf springs made of rectangular tube running from where it is made of U- rails. The manual gearbox of the 3.4 -liter V6 has the designation R150F while the automatic one A340F ( Aisin code: 30- 40LE ) is installed. The Tacoma from 1995-1997 made by a simple flatbed had to request a manual transmission in conjunction with 3.4 -liter V6. From 1998, this version was only available with four-cylinder engine. The versions of Toyota Racing Development (TRD ), there was from 1998. In the case of the V6 engine, the cars were equipped with a locking rear differential.

The Prerunner models were also supplied from 1998. They have the same suspension front and rear, the same suspension geometry, the same frame, the same design and the same engines as the Tacoma 4x4 this model year. The Prerunner was optionally equipped with the TRD off-road package, which, when the car had installed the V6 also a locking rear differential (and some other changes to the chassis, such as the Tacoma 4x4) included. One drawback was that there was no five-speed manual gearbox. The automatic transmission of Tacoma V6 were called A340E. Because of the similarity between Prerunner and 4x4 you can convert a Prerunner with purchased parts in a 4x4, but this is not recommended by the Internet community.

In the first years of production the Tacoma sold very well and drew particular at young buyers. The first generation was subjected to a total of two facelifts, first in 1998 and the second in 2001. Changes here were limited mainly to new grille and headlights. The mechanical changes were the use of a contactless ignition 1997 and 1998 longer rear leaf springs. All -wheel drive models after 2000 had an automatic freewheel differential ( ADD).

The only change in the model year 2001 was a new, four-door Double Cab model. The cars with extended cab had a flatbed with 2 m in length, while the crew cab could produce only a platform length of 1.7 m. Many customers was bothered by the short trailer, but this disadvantage informed the Tacoma with most of its competitors.

2001 Toyota brought along with the facelift on the front of the vehicle, a new S- Runner - out equipment package, which included the installation of the V6 engine. These included 16 " alloy wheels, a manual five-speed gearbox and Tokico gas shock absorbers. From 2001 to 2004, only 200 units per month were prepared. In 2003, the Tacoma could outdo the sales figures of the previous year by 16.5 %. In the coming years, the Tacoma won more and more popularity. In 2004, he surpassed the Nissan Frontier and Dodge Dakota, but was still 2.2% behind the Ford Ranger.

2008 Toyota announced by itself a guarantee of 15 years against rust perforation ( unlimited mileage ) for the 1995-2000 models because it had been found that rusty rust due to improper protection in a small number of the Tacoma frame. Toyota promised to either repair the frame or buy back the cars to 1.5 times the KKB price.

2nd generation (since 2005)

Toyota Tacoma (2009)

At the Chicago Auto Show 2004 Toyota showed a larger and more powerful Tacoma. This car was in 18 different configurations, that included three cab variants, four transmission options, two engine options and two platform lengths. A 4.0 -liter V6 engine, type Toyota 1GR -FE, took the place of the old 3.4 liter. The new V6 models offered many improvements, such as a towing capacity of 2,950 kg and a payload of 750 kg. The new engine produced 236 hp (176 kW ) and had a torque of 361 Nm. The small, all-new 2.7 -liter engine R4 was specified with an output of 159 hp (119 kW) and a torque of 244 Nm.

Toyota also introduced the equipment X-Runner, which replaced the ill- salable S -Runner features of its predecessor. The X-Runner was delivered with the V6 engine in conjunction with a manual six-speed gearbox, 18 " alloy wheels, a lowered suspension by 50mm and an X - Brace suspension package. Toyota also added another hill descent assistant ( DAC) and Hill-start assistant ( HAC) for models to which were equipped with the TRD package. Desired, fully or partially lockable differentials were available. All Tacoma had on the bed four mounting rails, tie hooks, loading boxes, and - if a TRD package was ordered - one socket. The mounting rails holding loads up to 100 kg.

The 2006 model differed slightly from the Model 2005. Few of the available upon request only up to that equipment details were now supplied as standard. For the 2007 model, there were two new interior colors; 2008, no changes were introduced. The model 2009 had more safety features and the mechanical partially lockable differential was no longer available. Only the TRD models had still a fully lockable differential. The second-generation Tacoma will be built in Tijuana ( Baja California ) and Fremont ( California). The plastic trays are all built in Mexico.

In Canada, the Tacoma model year 2009 got a new 6 -disc CD changer, new pitman arm, and a new stability program (VSC ).

Safety and structural rigidity

The Tacoma comes standard with ABS, Brake Assist ( BAS) and Electronic Brake -force Distribution ( EBD). In model year 2008, a rollover sensor came to the side airbags in the flap - if present - triggers. Since the 2009 model year, all Tacoma Toyota's Star Safety System with stability control (VSC ) and traction control have ( TRAC ). Front side airbags and curtain airbags for both rear seat rows are also supplied as standard such as active head restraints.

The smaller pickups like the Tacoma, bring generally not so good results in crash tests as the larger pickups. In a test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS ) with the Tacoma and its competitors could only equipped with side airbags Tacoma achieve the best grade of "good " in the side impact test. Also in the frontal impact of Tacoma was rated as "good". And in 2009, won the Tacoma with the active head restraints even the cost of IIHS Top Safety Pick.

Special features of the X-Runner

The Toyota X - Runner is a limited edition model. It is available in only three exterior colors per year, a total of four exterior colors. From 2005 to 2008, the X-Runner was available in Speedway Blue ( blue), Radiant Red (red) and Black Sand Pearl ( black). 2009 Radiant Red fell off and was replaced with Barcelona Red Metallic.

The main differences between the X-Runner and the other trim levels relate to the chassis and the stiffness of the frame. Toyota built an X-beam in a rear part of the frame to reinforce this (hence the name X-Runner ). In addition, the frame is reinforced by two cross-members.

On request there is a package with bigger brakes ( BBK) of TRD, which consists of brake discs with 332 mm diameter and calipers with four guns. The BBK package (Big Brake Kit) was designed by StopTech.

Toyota Racing Development ( TRD)

Since 1998, Toyota offers a new TRD off-road package. The package includes off-road tires on 16 " alloy wheels, TRD shocks, a rear locking differential, and the TRD stickers. In 2003, a Toyota, a TRD Sport Package for the big tundra. Only since 2005, this is also available for the Tacoma. The package includes high-performance tires for the road on 17 " alloy wheels, shock absorbers, inspired by the racing hood, and TRD sport stickers. It costs about U.S. $ 200, - more than the original TRD off road package.

TRD announced on 30 October 2007 to a compressor for the FJ Cruiser and Tacoma equipped with the 4.0 L V6 engine. This compressor can be obtained from Toyota dealers. It increases engine output to 304 hp (224 kW) ( compared to the standard 236 hp available (174 kW ) of Tacoma and the 239 hp (176 kW ) of the FJ Cruiser). The torque increases to 453 Nm. All figures are net of SAE standard.

This new TRD supercharger can in all Tacoma model year 2005 - to be installed in 2009, as well as in the FJ Cruiser model year 2007 - 2009th The compressor kit includes an Eaton Roots compressor built into a one-piece intake manifold, iridium spark plugs, and a set 5- fold -ribbed belts. If the compressor is not installed by such a dealer, it applies to only the parts warranty of 12 months or 19,300 km ( 12,000 mls ). The suggested retail price of the compressor is U.S. $ 4.500, - without installation.

Accessories compressors

Also for motors 2RZ -FE and 3RZ -FE there are TRD compressors. They are manufactured by Alpine Developments. This kit is intended to increase the engine power by 50 % and produced a boost pressure of 0.55 bar. Most often you can see the TRD supercharger for the 5VZ -FE V6 engine, which is built by Magnuson Products. It is intended to increase the engine power of 190 hp (142 kW) to 251 hp (187 kW).

For the 2005-2008 available 1GR -FE engine, there is a compressor of URD. It increases the engine power of 236 hp (176 kW) to 366 hp (273 kW). Manufacturer is Rotrex.

Use by the U.S. armed forces

In the war in Iraq and in Operation Enduring Freedom, many Toyota Tacoma have been used by the American armed forces. Usually these were double cab SR5 models with equipment or TRD packages.

Although it very often gives the Hilux on which the Tacoma is based in the Middle East, the U.S. military bought the Tacoma by U.S. dealers, modified it accordingly and shipped them to Iraq. Tacoma and Hilux have the same body, but the chassis of the Tacoma differs significantly from that of the Hilux and is considered to be much weaker. Its gasoline engine runs much quieter than the diesel engine of the HMMWV ( Hummer). From the thus acquired civilian vehicles the stock radio and almost all outdoor lighting was expanded. Instead, received the car infrared lights, so that they could be used with night vision devices. The engines remained unchanged, but the vehicles were equipped with mud flaps, winches and roll bars for holding machine guns.
