Wilmette in is a municipality in Cook County in the northeast of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, 27,087 people lived in Wilmette.

Wilmette is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is considered as a bedroom community in the North Shore District. In 2007, Wilmette as the seventh best place in the United States was assessed for the growth of children.

Geography

Wilmette is located at 42 ° 04'38 " north latitude and 87 ° 43'25 " west longitude and extends over 14.0 km ², spread to 13.9 km ² land and 0.1 km ² water surface. Wilmette is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan and is a northern suburb of Chicago, just north of Evanston. The city center of Chicago is located 25.2 km south. The North Shore Channel in Wilmette flows into Lake Michigan.

History

Before European settlement, a Potawatomi village was located on " Indian Hill ", an area in present-day Winnetka. Today's village Wilmette was named after Antoine Ouilmette, a French-Canadian fur trader, who was married to the daughter of Potawatomi chief Sauganash. For his assistance in bringing about the Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1829, the U.S. government announced Ouilmette 5.2 km ² of land at the territory of modern communities Wilmette and Evanston.

Catholic farmers from around Trier settled in the 1840s reflected in the range of Wilmette. They named their village, which lay west of Ridge Road, Gross Point. In 1848 Ouilmette sold his land to the farmers.

The Chicago and Milwaukee Railway was built in 1854 to facilitate the settlement of the area north of Chicago. In 1857 built John G. Westerfield cucumbers and vinegar factories in the area. Also, a cooperage, a brick factory and an ice house was built.

In 1869 the Chicago and Milwaukee Railway built the first railway station in the area. On September 19, 1872, the village of Wilmette was founded, the village of Gross Point was incorporated on September 19, 1874. The 19 September is celebrated locally as Charter Day.

Wilmette was nearly amalgamated from its southern neighbors Evanston neighbors in the years 1894 and 1897. Proponents wanted to take advantage of the existing good infrastructure of the neighboring village. Several referendums to take over but failed.

About the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad (North Shore Line) got Wilmette in 1899 after the Milwaukee Road.

One of the Bahai House of Worship was built in 1920-1953 in Wilmette.

According to the census of 2000, there were 27,651 inhabitants in 10,039 households, and 7,730 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,984 inhabitants per km < 2 There were 10,319 housing units at an average density of 741 units per km2.

There were 10,039 households in which children lived in 40.6 % of cases under 18 years. In 68.9 % of households lived married couples living together, 6.4 % had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0 % were non-families. 21.1 % of all households were single-person households, and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.19 persons.

Approximately 29.7 % of the population were under 18 years old, 3.6% were aged 18 to 24, 21.7 % 25 to 44 years old, 27.8 % 45-64 years old and 17.2 % were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.

According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household in the $ 120,469, and the median income for a family was $ 149,104. Males have a median income of $ 97,143 compared with $ 50,007 for women. The per capita income was $ 55,611. About 1.3 % of families and 2.3 % of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.6% of young people under the age of 18 and 4.7 % of those age 65 or over.

Attractions

Wilmette is home to the Bahai House of Worship and the administrative offices of the Bahá'í National Spiritual Assembly. In 2007, the house of worship was named one of the Seven Wonders of Illinois by the Illinois Bureau of Tourism.

Wilmette has a small, two cinemas comprehensive multiplex, called the Wilmette Theatre on Central Street, which is located in the city center.

Wilmette has three shopping centers. One of them is the Plaza del Lago, one of the oldest shopping centers in the United States, located on Sheridan Road. The other two, Edens Plazza and Westlake Plaza, located at the Lake Street on the Edens Expressway.

Other attractions include the Gillson Park with access to the beach, the marina and a free-wheeling area for dogs; Langdon Beach and Centennial park with a public pool, tennis and ice skating rink. The Wilmette Golf Club, which is located west of the city, houses a 5.8 km long course.
