1983 World Ice Hockey Championships
The games of the 49th World Ice Hockey Championships and 60th Hockey Championship in 1983 took place in the countries BR Germany, Japan and Hungary. The meetings were held on the following dates and in the following places:

The boredom while title fight last year again led to small but significant changes in the competition format of the A-WC. After the preliminary round won here points and gates should not be taken in the final round. They wanted to prevent in this way that the dominant Soviet selection decreed at the very beginning of the final round on an unbeatable points lead. It was hoped that the IIHF causes significant voltage increase, which it did in this tournament. This new regulation was referred to in the art as " Lex Soviet Union." In addition, the relegation round was reintroduced. Here, here, the teams took to the preliminary points. They wanted to ensure in this way that surprise success in the first round also beat in the final to book.
The recent change in the mode A World Cup now also led to a fundamental reform of the Hockey Championship. Now should be used only the preliminary round matches for the championship. It was no longer, as in previous years, the placement decisive but, as has been 1969 to 1975, the results of the European teams with each other. There was thus again a standalone EM table.
This year's A-WC provided for the USSR the 19th title win, so this einstellten the record for the Canadians, and the 22th European title. But the new mode led to a long no longer experienced tension in the title fight. The decision about the title was ultimately only on goal difference.
