The Bornholm Street Station is a railway station of the S -Bahn in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district of Pankow district. It lies on the northern runway Berlin and Szczecin railway and a link to the beautiful Allee station at the Berlin ring road.

History

The passenger traffic of the Northern Railway, which had in 1877 started its operation since the end of the 19th century became the Stettin Station, the starting point of the railway in 1842 opened Szczecin, out. Both routes branched to the north of Bornholm road, a railway station, there were in this area, however, long time did not.

On October 1, 1935, built according to plans of architect Richard Reichsbahn Brademann station Bornholm street was passed with two platforms of circulation. In the press, the station was called " Berlin's most beautiful train station "; Brademann pointed out that the station " also had repräsentatieren. "

After the Second World War, Berlin was divided. The station was located right at the limit of the Soviet sector ( East Berlin) to the French sector of West Berlin. To guide travelers in East Berlin Pankow no longer on the West Berlin station fresh spring, the existing for freight connecting curve was electrified from the direction Schönhauser avenue for the S-Bahn - operation from the end of 1952. The tracks led east at the station Bornholm street over, the trains stopped not there.

The station was closed during the construction of the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961. The West Berlin trains towards Frohnau and Heiligensee was settled from now on, just across the tracks on the western platform A, the trains did not stop. Originally, it was intended to keep open a West Berliners as travelers on also located on East Berlin territory Wollankstraße station. That did not happen and the station was a " ghost station ". The train service from Nice Allee towards Bernau and 1962 Oranienburg was on the connecting curve, which was expanded to double track after 1961 and separated from the remote tracks; while the two tracks were accompanied in its immediate frontier zone of an additional wall. In typical Berlin wit at the time this building project was derided as " Ulbricht curve".

After German reunification, the platform A was re-opened on 22 December 1990. At the Ostkurve first two provisional side platforms were built on 5 August 1991, where trains are then held back in the direction Bernau. Later, the station was rebuilt so that there is one platform for trains north to south and one for the south-north direction. On 1 December 1997, the re-opened platform B went for the trains heading north into operation.

Facilities

The train station is spanned by the evil bridge. The station building is as a rider station at street level above the tracks. The bungalow -like building has a pentagonal superstructure and a small tower, which is adorned with the S -Bahn icon. The station was originally as Baumschulenweg from a side platform B for traffic heading north - there was no track from the east - and a central platform A south facing position. Today the platform installations of two island platforms with four tracks exist that are served in the direction of operation. The western platform serves the trains of the Northern Railway and the Szczecin railway towards the city center or circle line, the eastern trains in the opposite direction.

East of the S-Bahn tracks run the tracks of the mainline. For the mainline, there are no platforms in the field of Bornholm road.

Built by Richard Brademann facilities of the station ( station building and stair access ) are now a protected monument.
