BMW i8

IAA 2013

The BMW i8 is a hybrid vehicle developed by BMW. It was BMW Vision EfficientDynamics at the 2009 IAA publicly introduced as a concept car. At the IAA 2013, the presentation of the production car followed.

Concept

The concept study has served as a technology platform for further development of BMW. Energy saving techniques have been previously installed in existing models, an overall concept has been developed for energy saving in the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics from the outset. Body and drive have been designed specifically saving aspects as energy.

Series production

BMW has announced the Vision EfficientDynamics from the end of 2013 to build as a production vehicle. At the IAA 2011, the follow-up study called BMW i8 was shown. The production car will cost from € 126,000.

Technology

The model-specific, developed by the BMW Group and manufactured in the BMW i8 plug- in hybrid system consists of a compact three-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, an electric motor and a rechargeable also on conventional household electrical outlets lithium -ion battery. The engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels, the 96 kW/131 hp electric motor derives its power to the front axle. The total capacity is 266 so kW ( 362 hp), which in 4.4 s from 0, the vehicle accelerates to 100 km / h and a top speed of 250 km / h ( limited) allows. He will emit only 49 g / km of CO2 and 2.1 liter petrol consumption ( according to European cycle). As energy storage are 98 lithium -polymer cells. The range of the vehicle should be 550 km with exclusive use of the gasoline engine. By switching the electric motors, the range is increased by a further 50 km to a total of about 600 km. The BMW i8 has a coefficient of drag (Cd ) value of 0.26 at aerodynamically balanced balance. The use of light and crash-proof high-tech material carbon fiber leads at least the same strength to weight savings of 50 percent compared to steel or approximately 30 percent compared with aluminum.
