Burgstall, South Tyrol

Postal ( Postal Italian ) is a municipality with 1798 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in South Tyrol (Italy ) south of Merano. It borders Gargazon in the south, to Merano in the north, to the west by Lana and on the east by Verano Mölten.

The municipality is bordered on the east by Tschögglberg and separated of Lana by the Adige. The municipality has a size of about 6 km ², with approximately half are registered as agricultural or forest green in the land book. There is mostly mild, Mediterranean -influenced climate. The population lives mainly from agriculture in fruit cultivation, tourism and services.

History

Postal was built in the shelter of the castle of Count von Volkmar, which is only a ruin today. To the church and much later the school building they were built around. The historic buildings are located on a slope, because in the Middle Ages the valley was still marshy and inaccessible. Today, the village center is moved to the bottom due to the favorable environment more and more. For the reclamation of the valley floor, the fascists were responsible, which wanted to create through the cultivation of the valley new jobs. Today, the beneficiaries of this project are the former United Burgstaller fruit growers whose fields extend into the valley floor.

Postal belonged to the end of the First World War to the judicial district of Merano and was part of the district of Merano.

Economy

In the valley bottom, the bottom is moist and nutrient- rich, especially apples are grown. On the higher slopes vines are cultivated, the better tolerated the slightly more bare ground than the fruit trees. The dairy industry was supplanted in the 1980s, entirely of fruit growing. Traffic

Community activities

There are many active clubs in Postal, which act primarily on a voluntary basis. The most members clubs are the band and the volunteer fire department.
