Geography

Location

The settlement area is scattered on a low mountain range to the northeast over the Rienz. The municipal area ranges from 590 m up to 2100 m ( Rodenecker Alm to below the Astjoches ). The settlement area itself extends from an altitude of 750 m to 1400 m. A good road leads to four kilometers away Mühlbach. The nearest towns are Brixen (16 km; there also daily bus service ) and Brunico ( 30 km). The South Tyrolean provincial capital Bolzano is 60 km away, the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck almost 100 km. Rodeneck belongs to the district community Eisacktal.

Structure

Rodeneck consists of seven fractions. In the capital Vill ( 885 m; 500 inhabitants) are primary school and kindergarten, town hall and library, multi-purpose building "Haus Konrad von Rodank " and the fire hall, parsonage and parish church, a bank and a commercial area as well as the main attraction, the Castle Rodenegg. Through a sort of ring road connected with Vill, each about 1 kilometer away from each other to find the fractions Gifen (980 m; scattered village, about 100 inhabitants), Nauders (980 m; street village, about 250 inhabitants) and St. Paul (860 m; small village with more scattered settlement, about 100 inhabitants). Between Vill and Gifen branches off the road that leads to Spisses (960 m; 80 inhabitants), a south-east against Lüsen towards extending extended scattered settlement. From Nauders from a mountain road leads past the 2004 newly constructed synthetic turf football field to the mountain hamlets Ahnerberg ( 1200 m; 40 inhabitants) and Fröllerberg ( 1200 m; 70 inhabitants), further to the edge of the Rodenecker Alm ( Parking Zumis, 1750 m ) and from there down to the neighboring village Lüsen.

Demographics

The community now has almost 1200 inhabitants, a figure that has changed only slightly in the last 200 years. So 1821 933 inhabitants were already reported, in 1900 there were 746, in 1961 893, in the 1991 census 1031 and eventually to the turn of the millennium for the first time about 1100.

History

Rodenecker local and farm names point to a prehistoric or Roman settlement. This is supported also by the discovery of the remains of " hill forts " that date back to the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 1500 BC). Traces of hunters resting places ( non-local flint and rock crystal splitter) on the Rodenecker Alm come even from the Mesolithic period (ca. 5000 BC).

Documented the settlement was first named as " Rotungun " mentioned in 1050 ( as a place of donations to the bishop ). It occurs then for centuries in various word changes; the name " Rodeneck " is first mentioned in 1314. Rodeneck gained as a separate court rule far beyond the town boundaries in importance. As a truce of Castle Rodenegg the site's history has always been closely linked to the fate of the castle; the inhabitants were obliged to provide for the upkeep of the castle lord and preservation of the castle, and enjoyed themselves for so many (especially fiscal) privileges. Since the beginning of the 19th century Rodeneck is run as an independent community, which managed a community leader since 1822. Hard times lived through the place in the First World War and in the following years of fascism and the ruthless Italianisation. The community in 1926 also lost their self-government and community Mühlbach was assumed. Only in 1955 was gained after a long struggle again the independence back.

The Verfachbücher the court Rodeneck are located in the South Tyrolean Archive ( period 1528-1850 ).
