Ciro Verratti

Ciro Verratti (born 17 August 1907 in Archi, † July 6, 1971 in Milan ) was an Italian journalist and Fechter, who had particularly specializes in the foil.

Biography

Already at the World Fencing Championships 1929 in Naples, in which, however, only European associations were at the start, Verratti won the gold medal with the team, which included a total of eight athletes. Also in the next few years he won several titles at the international championships and also was Italian Champion in 1939.

However, the greatest sporting success Verrattis remained the gold medal, also with the team at the Olympic fencing competitions in Berlin in 1936. There he defeated in the final together with Giorgio Bocchino, Manlio Di Rosa, Giulio Gaudini, Gioacchino Guaragna and Gustavo Marzi, the French team and so was Olympic champion. At foil individual he did not go to the start.

Parallel to the sport career Verratti also began his career as a journalist after he had resigned from the fencing, he was from 1961 a reporter for Corriere della Sera, for which he reported at the Giro d' Italia and Tour de France. The Italians died in 1971 aged 64 in a car accident.
