Estadi Sarria (Spanish Estadio de Sarria ) was a multifunctional stadium in Barcelona (Spain). Located in the affluent district of Sarria stadium was home to the Primera División club Espanyol.

History

The stadium was built in 1923 and inaugurated on 18 February 1923. It was used mainly for football matches Espanyol and summarized last 43 667 spectators. The stadium was the official venue of the FIFA World Cup 1982. Here were the three matches in Group C ( Italy vs Argentina, Argentina vs Brazil and Italy vs Brazil) instead. The match Italy vs Brazil was the decisive match and is considered by some Brazilians called The Tragedy of Sarria (A tragedian do Sarria ). Mid-nineties, the club became more and more in financial and economic difficulties and had consequently sell the stadium grounds. The reason for this financial mess the lost, symbolic UEFA Cup Final 1988 is called against Bayer 04 Leverkusen today still. After this debacle, from the perspective of Espanyol, the club entered a sporting and economic crisis and the high demands could no longer meet henceforth. 1992 found some matches of the Olympic football tournament held in this stadium. The last game was played on 21 June 1997 the 42nd matchday of the 1996/97 season. Espanyol won against FC Valencia 3-2. In the same year, the stadium was demolished with the surrounding facilities and new modern building erected. For supporters of the club Sarria is still the true home of the club. At the time of the demolition, there were therefore strong protests in the city, demanding the preservation of the stadium.
