The Estádio José Alvalade XXI is a football stadium in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. It is owned and home ground of Sporting Lisbon.

History

The Estádio José Alvalade XXI is the center of the complex Alvaláxia, which includes a cinema with a movie theater, a fitness center, a club museum, a sports hall, a clinic and an office building. The stadium was designed inside and out very colorful. Thus, the facade was painted in different colors, the curved roof and the big yellow roof supports shape the image of the stadium. In the stands, the different colored plastic seats were distributed mixed.

The sports facility holds 50,076 spectators and was officially opened with a friendly match Sporting Lisbon against Manchester United ( 3-1 ) on 6 August 2003. The stadium was built by the architect Tomás Taveira is owned by Sporting Lisbon. The five -star stadium by UEFA is right next to the old system.

It was the venue of three group matches, quarter - and semi-final of the European Football Championship 2004. Besides the five games of the 2004 European Football Championship, including the semi-final match between Portugal and the Netherlands, took place on 18 May 2005, the UEFA Cup final of the 2004/05 season between CSKA Moscow and Sporting Lisbon at the Estádio José Alvalade XXI, which lost the Lisbon 1:3. The closest metro station is Campo Grande.
