Gilze en Rijen

( Listen? / I ) Gilze en Rijen is a municipality in the Netherlands, North Brabant province. It has a population of 25 846 (as of 1 January 2013). The total surface area of the municipality is 65.69 km ².

Location and economic

Rijen is located eight kilometers east of Breda and twelve kilometers west of Tilburg, about 4 kilometers north of the A58 motorway and the railway between the two cities. In Rijen is also the Gilze- Rijen station. Also performs a highway from Breda to Tilburg by Rijen.

South of Rijen Gilze- Rijen is the Vliegbasis ( a military airfield ), now home base of helicopters. He is a major NATO base in the Netherlands and has a 2779 -meter-long airstrip. The " Koninklijke Luchtmacht " ( Dutch Air Force ), is the largest employer in the community.

Further south is the village of Gilze where tourism is important. West of the air base is Molenschot, a small farming village with a St. Anne consecrated chapel has.

History

The two largest villages emerged in the Middle Ages and soon got their own churches. The Eighty Years' War was hard on Gilze. It was in 1584 raided, looted and burned by soldiers who had their camp near Antwerp. Later it also soldiers of the army were quartered, sometimes rightly had devastating consequences for the villages. In the 17th century the pilgrimage chapel of Molenschot was built. In 1762, burned down a part of Gilze after an arsonist had set fire to a church.
