Geertruidenberg

( Listen? / I ) geertruidenberg is a municipality in the Dutch province of North Brabant. On January 1, 2013 its population was 21,510. The total area of the municipality is 28.2 km ².

The municipality comprises the towns and the villages Geertruidenberg Raamsdonk and Raamsdonksveer where the municipality is located.

Location and economic

The municipality is located in the northwest of the province, between the Biesbosch and Oosterhout, north of the A59 motorway and west of the motorway Utrecht - Breda ( A27 ). From this highway exit leading to Raamsdonksveer and 12 km east facing Waalwijk. Geertruidenberg is located on the river Amer (See Oosterhout ) and has an inland port. In the town there are two large power stations, and because of the location on the water a versatile industry. Also the tourism and agriculture are not without significance.

History

The area belonged until 1813 to Holland. The Count of Holland granted city rights Geertruidenberg 1213, it was then the first city in Holland. After the tsunami of 1421 it lost its importance. Nevertheless, the area was until the end of the Eighty Years' War, still a hard-fought border fortress between Holland and Brabant.

The village of Raamsdonk 1273 mentioned for the first time; it is a long village of the area " Langstraat ", with a tradition of agriculture and leather and shoemaking. Raamsdonksveer originated as a settlement of boatmen and rushes and reeds editors at a ferry.

Attractions

In Raamsdonksveer, near the highway, is the Louwman Collection ( formerly: Nationaal Automobiel Museum ), one of the largest car museums in the Netherlands, which is open only in spring and summer.

In the city of Geertruidenberg is the Gothic three-nave St. Gertrudis Church. On the square is the old town hall and several small houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Both Geertruidenberg and Raamsdonksveer have a small marina.

Biesbosch nature reserve is not far away.
