History

Oirschot and the surrounding area have a long history. Even in the history of the area was inhabited by Oirschot. It still remember old graves from that time in the woods near Westelbeers and traces of settlements from the Stone Age in the same area and in the Oirschotse Heath. It is assumed that a first predecessor of St. Mary's Church on the Vrijthof in Oirschot comes from the 5th century AD. For this reason, the 1500 - year anniversary of the village was celebrated in 1980.

The first written records of the reign history date back to the early 14th century. The boundaries of the old community Oirschot extend approximately to the boundaries of the " gemeijnten ". These were undeveloped parcels (to them included the inhabitants of the Best ), the dukes of Brabant gradually sold in the first half of the 14th century, the inhabitants of Oirschot. The inhabitants received for the right to use these parcels together.

1334 the inhabitants of Oostelbeers and Middelbeers received a fee of Duke Johann III. the right of use over the " gemeijnt " Beers. This was the area between Oerle, Oerschot, Oisterwijk and Hilvarenbeek.

Apart from some marginal corrections and enlargement to Westelbeers in 1803, the boundaries as they were then fixed, remained unchanged.

1819 Best was separated from the municipality of Oirschot and has since become a separate municipality.

In 1997, the old communities Oirschot and Oost, West -en Middelbeers were united to the new community Oirschot.

Place name

For the etymology of the name, there are several possible explanations. Seems to be the most likely by Dr. Maurits Gijsseling. A schoot (written scoet in Middle Dutch and shortened to scot ) is a projecting piece of land on higher ground in a marshy area. In the case of the name " Oirschot " the aurochs ( oor ) had on his camp. The name would be older than the occupation of the site after such declaration.
