Hampshire

Hampshire [ hæmpʃə ] is a county on the south coast. The council is based in Winchester. The cities of Southampton and Portsmouth were separated as a separate management unit ( Unitary Authority) in 1997, although they belong from ceremonial reasons yet to Hampshire. Other cities in the county are Basingstoke, Andover, Aldershot, Winchester and Farnborough.

Aldershot, Portsmouth and Farnborough are garrisons of the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.

History

The county was named by April 1, 1959 " Southamptonshire " (also County of Southampton ), and appears under that name in some cards from the Victorian period. The short form of the county is Hants. This old name also appears as a place of embarkation of many emigrants, Ellis Iceland, New York. He is recorded in the Commonwealth Instrument of Government of 1653, which was acquired by Oliver Cromwell in 1654 when he took over the office of Lord Protector.

Winchester, the county seat, is a historic city that was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex. Southampton and Portsmouth are major ports. An international airport is located between Southampton and Eastleigh. Hampshire is a popular holiday area, which is characterized by numerous tourist attractions such as the coastal baths, the harbor area of Portsmouth and the vehicle museum at Beaulieu. In addition to the so-called New Forest is located within the borders of Hampshire, a large part of the South Downs. Both areas are national parks.

The Isle of Wight was on the other side of the Solent until 1974 part of Hampshire, but has since formed its own county. At the same time Bournemouth was ceded to Dorset.

In Hampshire about 1.3 million people live (as of 2010 ). Along with Portsmouth and Southampton is around 1.75 million.
