Hipgnosis

Hipgnosis was a British graphic design agency that existed from 1968 to 1985.

History

Hipgnosis was founded by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. The name " Hipgnosis " is a graffito come, the Powell and Thorgerson discovered outside her apartment. They were the word combination of " hip " ( German: " cool, hip " ) and the mystical- religious " Gnosis " as an original parody, pun, respectively, of the word "hypnosis" to designate their future graphic design studio.

The agency created record covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis and other artists who were with the record label Harvest under contract. Identifying and main element of the cover design were mostly surreal staged photographs. The company's headquarters was in London.

Among the employees counted out in 1974, photographer Peter Christopherson, who was to later become known as a musician with Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, and especially coil.

1983 Storm Thorgerson left the company to continue working as an independent artist. 1985 had to file for bankruptcy Hipgnosis.

Especially during the 1970s put Hipgnosis standards in the innovative design of the appearance of rock and especially art-rock albums that was raised here to a separate art form. This merit acts according to compendia and rock - encyclopedias today.
