Jim Ramstad

James Marvin "Jim" Ramstad ( born May 6, 1946 in Jamestown, Stutsman County, North Dakota) is an American politician. Between 1991 and 2009 he represented the state of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jim Ramstad attended until 1968, the University of Minnesota. Then he studied until 1973 at the George Washington University law. From 1968 to 1975 he was also a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. In the years 1969 and 1970 he worked on the staff of the Chairman of the House of Representatives from Minnesota. In 1970 he joined the staff of Congressman Thomas S. Kleppe of North Dakota. From 1974 to 1978 he was a lecturer at the American University in Washington. 1978 led Ramstad the election campaign of Congressman Bill Frenzel.

Politically, Ramstad joined the Republican Party. From 1981 to 1990 he was a member of the Minnesota Senate. In the congressional elections of 1990, he was elected as a candidate of his party in the third electoral district of Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he stepped on 3 January 1991 in the footsteps of Bill Frenzel. After eight re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 2009 for nine consecutive terms of office. In the elections of 2008 he gave up another candidacy.

In Congress was Ramstad member of the Committee on Ways and Means, and two sub-committees. He was also vice chairman of four other Congress committees. Among the Republican congressman from Minnesota, he was considered the most liberal, the conservative voted in 68 % of the votes, but at least in 21 % of the votes supported the liberal side of the house. Jim Ramstad is married and lives in Minnetonka. Today, he is a board member of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University
