History

As with many communities in the Corrèze is also Meymac back on a Gallo- Roman Hofgründung. This time it was the Romans Maximiacus, who built a homestead here on a Roman road through the Auvergne. The present name Meymac is therefore composed of the Roman name Maximiacus the Celtic suffix acum ( the homestead ) together. From 546 AD, during the Merovingian period, built the hermit Mammacus at this location a simple wooden church, in which then had a community of Christians in the region.

Some 500 years later, in 1085, had a certain Archambaud III. , Vicomte de Comborn, establish a monastery here, which was raised to an abbey in 1147. In 1265 Meymac was raised by Eble VII de Ventadour to the city and got ramparts.

In 1846, merged the communes of Saint -Germain- le- Lievre and Meymac.

Today Meymac is the gate to the Plateau de Millevaches and thus an important tourist place in Haute -Corrèze.
