Background

The idea for Mother Nature's Son came Paul McCartney after he had visited India in a course of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on the subject of nature. Composed he had the song later in his father's house in Liverpool. As a source of inspiration also served the song Nature Boy by Nat King Cole. John Lennon, who had attended the same course with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, wrote on the same topic a song titled Child of Nature. However, Mother Nature's Son was given preference, and Child of Nature was not included. Lennon released the song in 1971 with new lyrics under the name Jealous Guy on his solo album Imagine.

Recording

Mother Nature's Son was recorded in London's Abbey Road Studios on August 9, 1968. Producer was George Martin, Ken Scott assisted. Except Paul McCartney plays no Beatle on this recording. Paul McCartney first played 25 takes of the song on an acoustic guitar and sang. Take 24 was selected as the best recording, work continued on the 20 August 1968. McCartney added that day another acoustic guitar, percussion and timpani added in a separate multitracked. Following a brass quartet ( two trumpets and two trombones ) was added, which played a composed by McCartney and George Martin arrangement. Wild Honey Pie and Etcetera, of which Wild Honey Pie was released on the double album The Beatles: During the session two improvised songs were written. Etcetera on the other hand is one of the rarest Beatles songs at all and was never released.

With stereo and Monoabmischungen on 12 October 1968, the work on Mother Nature's Son were completed.

Publication

Mother Nature's Son was released on November 22, 1968 on the double album The Beatles (also known as The White Album ). An alternative version ( Take 2 of 9 August 1968) was released in 1996 on the album Anthology 3
