Nathan Deal

John Nathan Deal ( born August 25, 1942 in Millen, Jenkins County, Georgia ) is an American politician. Deal, who is a member of the Republican Party, was sworn in on 10 January 2011 as the Governor of the State of Georgia.

Life

Career

After schooling in public schools in Washington County Deal graduated from Mercer University in Macon, at which he in 1964 received his doctorate in law. From 1966 to 1968 he served as a soldier in the U.S. Army.

Deal began to work in a small law firm, first as a lawyer, however, was in 1970 appointed to the Northeastern Judicial Circuit, where he worked until 1971. From 1971 to 1972 he was judge of the Juvenile Court of Hall County, before he as an independent lawyer led his own firm from 1977 to 1979.

Political career

1981 Deal was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in the Senate of Georgia, where he, until 1993, a seat held twelve years. In 1992 he ran for the first time for a seat in the House of Representatives of the United States - with success. On January 3, 1993, he was also sworn in as a Democrat, as a congressman. When, after the midterm elections of 1994 the majority of the delegation from Georgia belonged to the Republican Party ( seven of the eleven MPs ), Nathan Deal joined on 10 April 1995, the party and thus became the eighth Republican Congressman of his state. As Deal 1996 reelection strove, he was confirmed with 66 percent of the vote of his district as a Republican in office. Deal was then still re-elected six times, three times with no democratic opposition candidate could be found and thus he was able to record 100 percent of the vote. During his time as Congressman Deal sat in the Energy and Commerce Committee. March 21, 2010 Deal resigned from Congress. The reason he stated his intention to run for the governorship of Georgia.

In the Primary Deal of his party narrowly won by about 2500 votes ahead of Karen Handel, the Secretary of State of Georgia. In the election in early November 2010, he ran against Democrat Roy Barnes, who served from 1999 to 2003 even as governor of Georgia. With 53 percent of the vote could deal Barnes, who came only to a share of 43 percent, quite clear distance. On 10 January 2011, he broke from then Sonny Perdue as governor.

Nathan Deal is married with his wife Sandra Dunagan four children, one son and three daughters.
