Not Guilty (song)

Not Guilty ( dt, 'Not guilty ') is a song by British musician George Harrison of 1968 It was taken in August 1968 by the Beatles on the White Album, but then discarded.. Harrison published in 1979 instead, a re-recording of the song. The Beatles' version was not published until 1996 as part of the Anthology series.

Background

Harrison wrote Not Guilty immediately after the return of the Beatles from India, where they had the guru, author of books on Vedic philosophy and the founder of Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi visited. Content, the song describes Harrison's discussion of the counter-culture of the 1960s as well as his dissatisfaction with its subordinate position in the band structure of the Beatles. In May 1968, the band in Esher a demo version of Not Guilty was taken up in Harrison's estate.

Production

Not Guilty was recorded in August 1968 at Abbey Road Studios in London. Producer was George Martin, assisted by Ken Scott. The Beatles recorded on August 7 and 8 to 101 takes of the song. For no song of the Beatles more takes were recorded. On 9 August, a mixdown was made ​​by Take 99 (Take 102), on the other instruments were recorded in the overdub process. Usually the song is recorded in the recording studio, while the singer is listening playback through headphones. Harrison asked, however, the song should included in the control room and the playback will be played loudly over the monitor speakers.

At the end of the recording session on August 9, the song was mixed in mono. A short time later, it was decided not to publish the song. A stereo version was therefore 1968 is no longer manufactured.

Publication

Like What's the New Mary Jane was deleted from the White Album Not Guilty, and the song remained unreleased.

In February 1979, Harrison released his tenth solo album, George Harrison, for which he re- recorded Not Guilty. On this version of Harrison playing acoustic guitar, accompanied by Steve Winwood on Fender Rhodes piano.

In 1985, the album sessions should appear that a number of unreleased Beatles songs could contain. For this album, Geoff Emerick produced in 1984 a first stereo version of Not Guilty, which was, however, reduced by about a minute. The album sessions remained unreleased.

Only in October 1996, the Beatles' version of Not Guilty appeared in the Anthology series. Here, the originally intended for the album sessions mix was used from 1984.
