Culture

Mangyan

The Indigenous peoples of the province are the Mangyans ( Manguianes in Spanish, Mañguianes in Old Tagalog ), consisting of the 7 different tribes. They colonize the interior of the island and are especially settled in the highlands. The Mangyans lived before the arrival of the Spaniards on the island. It is likely that they originally came from Indonesia, before they settled on the island

There are many historical and geophysical evidence that the Mangyans formerly inhabited the coasts, before they were forced to retreat into the jungle in the interior of the island when the Spanish colonizers reached Mindoro. Main reasons for this withdrawal was the circumvention of cultural confrontation, avoidance of diseases and the preservation of their way of life.

Today, the number of Mangyans is estimated to be only about 10% of the total population and thus to approximately 100,000 individuals whose habitat extends over both provinces. However, there are no exact figures on their them since many of them. Still in the higher regions of the island, far away from civilization to live and they also avoid contact with the lowland inhabitants

Administrative divisions

Oriental Mindoro is composed of 14 independent politically managed municipalities and a provincial town. These in turn are divided into a total of 426 barangays ( districts ). The province is further divided into two districts Congress.
