Geography

The district of Osterode am Harz is bordered to the west by the district of Northeim, in the north and north-east by the district of Goslar, in the southeast by the Thuringian district of Nordhausen, in the south of the Thuringian district of calibration field and on the southwest by the district of Göttingen.

In the division of Germany into the natural environment main units of the district includes the one with the upper and middle parts of resin of the resin and on the other to the south-western Harz foothills and smaller parts of the basin Eichsfelder landscapes of Weser -Leine Bergland. History

The circle Osterode am Harz was formed at the launch of the new district regulations for the province of Hannover on April 1, 1885 the largest part of the Office Osterode, the Office Herzberg and Osterode. Since 1939, the county district of Osterode am Harz said.

1945, the municipalities of Bad Sachsa Tettenborn from the district county Hohenstein were reclassified in the district of Osterode. In 1972, a portion of the dissolved district Blankenburg Neuhof, Walk Ried, Wieda and Zorge the district of Osterode, also a part of the dissolved district Zellerfeld with Bad Grund, Lerbach, Lonau, Riefensbeek - Kamschlacken and Sieber. Regional cooperation

To care for cultural bodies of the Regional Association of Southern Lower Saxony was founded as a registered association, composed of parts of the district. Furthermore, parts of the district belong to the Regional Association resin. Merger plans

After lengthy discussions about possible mergers with one or more neighboring districts of Osterode district council decided to enter into merger negotiations with the district Göttingen on 19 February 2013. From the union, the Osteroder local politicians promise a faster relief of the circle, by aid of the country. In addition, there are signs that the number of inhabitants in the district of Osterode will shrink by a quarter by 2030. The district of Osterode days ( 11 March 2013 ) and Göttingen ( 6 March 2013) have agreed to enter into merger negotiations. The new district of Göttingen ( 2016 ) can then occur on November 1, 2016. Originally also the district of Northeim was involved in the merger talks. In February 2013 Northeim broke off negotiations, however. The merger with Göttingen encounters in Osterode, despite criticism. A citizens' initiative advocates instead for a tie-up with the district of Goslar. August 15, 2013, the merger of the districts Göttingen and Osterode am Harz is fixed at 1 November 2016. Circuit city will be Göttingen.
