Prince of Asturias Awards

The Prince of Asturias Awards (Spanish: Premios Príncipe de Asturias, actually Prince of Asturias Awards ) are annually since 1981 in Oviedo, the capital of the Principality of Asturias, in the presence of the Spanish heir to the throne Infant Felipe of Spain ( and awarded since 2004 to his wife Doña Letizia ) by the Foundation Prince of Asturias.

The winners may be individuals, institutions or groups from all over the world, which are characterized by their resume in one of the following eight categories: art, literature, social sciences, communication and humanities, concord, international cooperation, scientific and technical research and sports.

The deliberations of the juries (one for each price) begin in May and continue until September, when the decision on the winner for the sport it drops. The deliberations of the juries will be conducted over two days at the Hotel Reconquista in the center of the Asturian capital. On the second day of deliberations, the Jury President released the price judgment.

The awards will be presented at the Campoamor Theatre. The individual 's Prince of Asturias prizes are endowed with a prize money of 50,000 euros. In addition, each prize winner will be awarded a sculpture that was designed by the Catalan artist Joan Miró. In 2005, the Foundation Premios Príncipe de Asturias celebrated its 25th anniversary. On this occasion, gave her one of the early winners, the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer to design a cultural center in Aviles, Asturias.
