Robert Esmie

Robert Esmie ( born July 5, 1972 in Jamaica ) is a Canadian athlete, winner of the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meters relay at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA.

Born in Jamaica and in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, grew up Esmie formed together with Glenroy Gilbert, Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey is the most successful season Quartet mid-1990s. At the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1993, he finished with the 4 x 100 meters relay 3rd place. In the Commonwealth Games 1994 he won gold with the 4 x 100 - meter relay.

In 1995, he was able to occupy the 3rd place at the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships in Barcelona in the 60 -meter individual sprint. It won his compatriot and later fellow at the Olympic Games, Bruny Surin, with which he again won gold together in the same year at the World Championships in Gothenburg.

At the Games in Atlanta, the Canadian team was not favored, although they had won pretty much all the titles in recent years, because the victories were always achieved in the absence of the U.S. team. Nevertheless, the Canadians beat the U.S. team in the final of the 4 x 100 -meter relay race by nearly half a second in order to underscore the claim to be the best team in this discipline in the world. This Esmie was not originally planned for the final, he replaced Carlton Chambers until the night before the race.

Esmie and his teammates captured two years later at the 1997 World Championships in Athens again the 1st place.
