Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore

The Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore Archdiocese or Chennai Meliapor (Latin Archidioecesis Madraspolitanus et Meliaporensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with the bishopric Chennai ( Madras).

The cathedral of the diocese is St. Thomas Basilica in Mylapore district. The Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore includes the city of Chennai and Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu. The archbishopric subject to the suffragan Chingleput, Coimbatore, Ootacamund and Vellore.

History

Forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore is founded in 1642 from the Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore out Vicariate Apostolic of Fort Saint George. In 1832 it was renamed Vicariate Apostolic Madras. On February 17, 1845 Apostolic Vicariate were parts of its territory from establishing the Apostolic Vicariate Hyderabad and Vizagapatam. The scale-up to an archbishopric was held on 1 September 1886. 1928 gave the archbishopric of parts of its territory establishing the mission sui juris from Bellary and the Diocese of Nellore. The Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore was taken on November 13, 1952 by the union of the Archdiocese of Madras with the Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore ( established on January 9, 1606 ); same areas were issued establishing the dioceses Vellore and Tanjore. On 19 July 2002 parts of the diocesan territory to the newly created Diocese of Chingleput Location.
