Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role

The Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor is one of the awards, which are annually awarded in the United States by the Screen Actors Guild, a union of actors. It is aimed at actors who have done an outstanding performance in a supporting role in a feature film. The category was created in 1995. The winners will be chosen in a secret ballot by the full members of the union.

History and Records

During the last 20 years, the Screen Actors Guild has awarded a total of 20 Awards in the category Best Supporting Actor to 20 different actors. The first prize winner was Martin Landau, who was honored at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1995 for his role as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood. The latest up to winners was Jared Leto, who was honored for his role as rayon in Dallas Buyers Club at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2014.

So far (as of 2014) voted the winner of this award in only eight cases, not with that of the later Academy Award-winning match. That was Ed Harris in 1996 for Apollo 13, Robert Duvall in 1999 for Civil Procedure, Albert Finney in 2001 for Erin Brockovich, Ian McKellen in 2002 for The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of Christopher Walken in 2003 for Catch Me If You Can, Paul Giamatti 2006 The Comeback Eddie Murphy in 2007 for Dreamgirls and Tommy Lee Jones in 2013 for Lincoln. 2013 was also the first time in this category (the second time ever ) that a later Oscar winner has not been previously nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award. Oldest winner and nominated actor with 82 years was 2012, the Canadian Christopher Plummer ( Beginners ). Youngest winner at 29 years old (if you let the posthumous award Heath Ledger disregarded) was the African- American Cuba Gooding Jr. ( Jerry Maguire - the game of life ), recently nominated actor Haley Joel Osment eleven years ( The Sixth Sense ).

The following list is a list of nominees and winners of the most common records in the category of Best Supporting Actor. The winners and nominees in the other actor categories are not counted.
