Sint-Michielsgestel

Sint- Michielsgestel ( listen? / I ) is a city and a municipality in the Dutch province of North Brabant. In Michielsgestel are Instituut voor Doven, among other things (Institute for the Deaf ) and the Conference Centre De Ruwenberg.

Herlaer

Sint Michielsgestel is first mentioned as the fief " Herlaer " and " Gestel " were merged to 1314, from which Sint Michielsgestel finally emerged. Herlaer itself is a first mention in 1142, and was a fief of the cathedral chapter of Liege.

Beekvliet

In Sint- Michielsgestel there was the church school Beekvliet. During the Second World War it was used as a hostage camp, as well as the seminary in hair. On May 4, 1942 450 Dutch were interned in Beekvliet, more hostages were added later. There, discussed the hostages on the renewal of Dutch society and overcoming the pillarisation ( verzuiling ). It was attended, among others, the two writers Simon Vestdijk and Anton van Duinkerken; also the later Nobel laureate Nikolaas Tinbergen was imprisoned here from 9 September 1942.

Today Beekvliet is an independent school with about 800 students.
