South Dakota House of Representatives

The House of Representatives from South Dakota (South Dakota House of Representatives ) is the lower house of the South Dakota State Legislature, the legislature of the U.S. state of South Dakota.

The chamber of parliament is made up of 70 members, with two deputies represent an electoral district. A special feature of South Dakota form two of the 35 Legislativdistrikte namely the District 26 and 28 Each of these is divided into two separate sub-districts, ie District 26 in 26A and 26B, as well as District 28 in 28A and 28B. In each case, a deputy of these sub-districts will be provided for the parliamentary chamber.

The conference hall of the House of Representatives is located together with the State Senate in the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre capital.

Structure of the chamber

Speaker of the House is the Speaker of the House. He is initially elected by the majority faction of the chamber before the confirmation by the whole Parliament follows. The Speaker is also responsible for the course of legislation and monitors the shutdowns in the various committees. Current speaker is Val Rausch of Big Stone City, a member of the Republican from the 4th electoral district. Unlike other States exists in South Dakota a convention that limits the term of office of Speakers to a single term.

Furthermore, a Speaker Pro Tempore is elected by the House of Representatives, only during the absence of the Speaker shall preside over it. He has traditionally been the successor to the Speakers in the next parliamentary chamber. Current Speaker Pro Tempore is Republican Brian Gosch from Rapid City, District 32 election.

Other important office holders are the Majority Leader ( Majority Leader ) and the leader of the opposition (minority leader), who are elected by the respective fractions. The Republican majority party is currently led by David Lust of Rapid City, 29 election district, Minority leader of the Democrats is Bernie Hunhoff from Yankton, 18th Election District.

In addition, a number of Whips are selected by each party to support the faction leaders (Floor Leaders ) at the appropriate group meetings.
