Thörigen

Thörigen is a municipality in the Oberaargau the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Thörigen is located on 483 m above sea level. M., 2.5 km southeast of Herzogenbuchsee and 6 km southwest of the town of Langenthal ( straight line ). The crossroads village stretches between the level of Altachentals on the northern edge of the Molassehügellandes Buchsiberge, in the Upper Aargau.

The area of ​​4.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the northern Bernese Mittelland. The central part of the area is occupied by Altachental, a 1 to 1.5 km wide plain which is drained west to Oenz and once formed a melt water channel at the edge of the glacial Rhone Glacier.

To the south of the municipality floor extends to the heights of the forest Buchsiberge, which are divided by the valley of the Stauffenbachs and its eastern tributary of the Duppental. The Stauffenbach in the level of Thörigen steps out at the upper village and joins west of the village with the Altache. West of Stauffenbachtals the forests of Mättenberg (570 m above sea level. Population

With 1023 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Thörigen one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Bern. Of the residents 97.9 % are German, 0.4 % French-speaking and 0.4 % speak English (as of 2000). The population of Thörigen amounted in 1850 to 718 residents in 1900 to 650 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated always in the range 640-700 people. Since 1960 (691 inhabitants) a significant population increase was recorded.

Economy

Thörigen was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, agriculture and fruit growing and cattle breeding and forestry an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1270 under the name Thoerinen. Later, the names Thurinon ( 1295), Thorinon ( 1312), Töringen (1320 ) and Thöringen ( 1452 ) published. The etymology of the place name is uncertain. You may Thörigen is derived from the Latin personal name taurinus.

In the Middle Ages Thörigen was under the Barons of Aarburg who sold their rights in 1429 to the town of Burgdorf. The village was assigned to the controlled Burgdorf bailiwick Lotzwil, but the high court was incumbent always (since 1460 also regulated by contract ) the Bernese bailiff in cheeks.
