History

From 1922 to 1935, the largest part of the highway was part of the old New England Interstate road system as a New England Interstate Route 18 (NE - 18) from Portland, Maine north-west to Littleton, New Hampshire ( about 179 km). From Littleton west to Montpelier in Vermont today's Highway and the former Interstate have different histories. The former Interstate proceeded further north along the present-day New Hampshire Highway 18 and the Vermont State Route 18 to St. Johnsbury ( parallel along the I-93 ), then along U.S. Highway 2 to to Montpelier.

Today's Highway runs along a more southerly route, which he uses intersections of the former New England Interstate Routes. From Littleton it runs along the New England Interstate Route 10 after Woodsville, then along the former New England Route 25 to Montpelier.
