UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists

The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is one of three international lists drawn up by the UNESCO in the framework of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2008. The Representative List includes cultural expressions such as dance, theater, music and oral traditions and customs, festivals and handicrafts. The list was introduced with the objective to make the intangible cultural heritage visible worldwide and awareness in order to strengthen the diversity of cultural expressions.

The list can be seen from the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The program Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the World Heritage program was completed between 2001 and 2005. By 2005, 90 cultural expressions were proclaimed masterpieces. The cultural forms on this list have been officially transferred on 5 November 2008 in the Representative.

History

1997 was called " Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage " by UNESCO launched the program of work. UNESCO has 90 special interest for conservation of intangible cultural forms from all regions of the world to " masterpieces " nominated in three proclamations ( May 18, 2001, 7 November 2003 and 25 November 2005), which formed the foundation for a representative selection of examples of intangible cultural heritage.

2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was adopted, which entered into force on 20 April 2006. So far, 158 countries (as of November 2013) ratified the Convention. Until 2005 and were officially proclaimed Masterpieces incorporated in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on November 5, 2008. Furthermore, there is a list of urgent conservation need of intangible cultural heritage, are carried in the high-risk forms of cultural expression.

Germany acceded to the Convention in July 2013.

Admissions process

The Representative List is amended annually since 2008 by new entries of cultural expressions. Nominations may be submitted by national governments to UNESCO. On the admission of new members of the Intergovernmental Committee decides for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage at its annual meeting in the winter. The Intergovernmental Committee shall be composed of 24 members who are elected from the representatives of the countries participating in the bi -annual UNESCO General Assembly.

As a prerequisite for the nomination of a cultural form of expression on the Representative List, they must have been taken previously in a national directory created. Therefore, each State Party created a National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage for documentation and inventory of national intangible cultural heritage. Examples of this are the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Austria and the list of living traditions in Switzerland.

The Representative List includes 281 cultural expressions from all regions of the world. (As of January 2014)
